One of the most well known black-belt tests is board breaking, when one “karate chops” through a block of wood with his bare hand. Though it seems an outwardly aggressive (and potentially dangerous) thing to do, it holds an essential place in the practice. Most martial arts training is done through sparring with a partner. Because you are emulating a fight, even though not in truth making contact, how do you know that you are capable of using sufficient strength to injure?

Block breaking is a great check for strength and form. If you are competent to break the standard 1 square foot, 3/4″ thick board, you are capable of breaking an adult humane forearm.

Though antecedently cited as a black-belt test, persons of all skill level may break boards, altho it is less mutual in lower belt classes.

Here’s how to do it:

Before the big day: Train your skin, muscles, and bones to receive pain. Injuries, once healed, beef up the body. This does not mean break your hand hitting everything you come across. Rather, it is comparable to a bodybuilder: little tears occur in the muscles from the prompt strain of lifting, then the lifter rests a day or two for the muscles to heal and grow. (This is called Progressive Resistance Training) When you’re ready:

1. Place your wood board amongst to stable chopping blocks (in karate schools, the dojo master will ofttimes hold it among his hands for you to break)

2. Firmly sink into your stance.

3. Put your thumb tightly next to your index finger.

4. Bend fingers more or less inwards, towards the palm (by moving them each so somewhat to the left if you’re right handed, and to the right if you are a lefty.)

5. Bring your arm into the air.

6. Forcefully throw your arm down, not into or onto the block, but beyond it. Do not stop before you reach the finish line…the goal is to break solidly through the wood.

Didn’t chop it on the initial try? Check in with yourself. If your hand is not broken and the pain is minimal, undertake again, but increase speed and force. Don’t plan on stopping the push when you hit the block; imagine yourself breaking through to the floor.
